Cynthia Romano, Partner

With 25 years of experience in performance improvement, turnaround management, transaction support, and investment analysis, Ms. Romano has spent her career helping companies transform their bottom line and improve their value as both advisor and CxO level management in a variety of industries.

Ms. Romano guides companies from where they are to where they want to be whether in significant distress or in need of a tune up. She specializes in liquidity management and profit improvement through operational restructuring, organizational and process redesign, capital sourcing, and business and creditor workout/management. Previously, Ms. Romano was a Manager in Bain’s Corporate Renewal Group, Managing Director at CRG Partners, CEO of a technology company, and Financial Analyst for an angel investor group in charge of the group’s due diligence.

Notable previous engagements include:

  • CFO of a $75M oil distributor. Company returned to profitability after three loss years.
  • COO of a $30M manufacturer. After 14 loss months, achieved profitability in four months of working together.
  • CRO of a $40M construction engineering firm. Company was returned to profitability and successfully refinanced.
  • GM of an ambulance company with 911 contracts. Stabilized cash and operations and sold the business, start to finish, in six weeks.
  • Financial advisor to an aerospace firm in Chapter 11. Successfully operated company with limited infrastructure to complete manufacturing and sale of all inventory and sale of business.
  • Advisor to $300M multinational brokerage with liquidity issues. Secured lender paid down 79% in two months; management buyout and refi paid remaining debt in full.
  • Liquidating agent for retailer under Chapter 7 trustee control. Gross recovery exceeded appraiser’s valuation by 9x.
  • Advisor to $170M family business. Improved financial controls, redesigned organizational structure around new management team, and spearheaded next generation assessment and transition planning.
  • Workout advisor to a $75M medical practice group with significant liquidity challenges.

Ms. Romano was a Smart CEO Brava Award winner honoring top female CEOs (2016) and co-winner of the Turnaround Management Association (TMA) Small Company Turnaround of the Year (Northeast, 2004), with numerous board seats, panels, and publications to her credit including Harvard Business School Turnaround Conference (2011, 2012), MIT PE Symposium (2008), Nassau County and Boston Bar Association Panelist and Trainer (2006, 2014), Debtwire Podcast Interviewee on Healthcare Restructuring (2017), Exit Planning Exchange (XPX) Speaker on Performance Improvement, and author of “The Three C’s of a Turnaround: Cash, Communication, and Control” (ABF Journal, 2007).  She also served as TMA Northeast Board Member (2004-2013), currently serves as ABI Northeast Advisory Board Member (2017 – Present), and is a Certified Turnaround Professional (CTP).
